There's a royal family everyone pays their respects to, but they're a figure head. Mostly as a stable point to determine where everyone else is in the hierarchy. You have some griffins trying to run a respectable business, and then you have to deal with protection rackets. I imagine the city to be stuck in a perpetual, rainy dusk, where the liquid flowing on the ground isn't rainwater, but the blood of some poor fool who got off'ed.

As a joke with myself, I wanted to make them like Cockoos, where they dumped their eggs on unsuspecting pegasi nests. Griffins are strong and hardy, so having one around as a guardian would be considered a good thing. Like Pegasi would actually bargain for such a privilege.

Gilda is basically a parody of the kind of the kind of show MLP refuses to be.

Think about it. MLP is one of the few cartoons with adult appeal that doesn't try to be cool. It's not cynical or ironic. It's just happy, fun, and clever. Gilda, with her forced and ridiculous attempts at slang (DORKIN' UP THE SKIES) and her obsession with being cool at all costs, is a parody of the kind of show Lauren and Craig have always disliked: something that tries too hard and panders to kids with embarrassing attempts at being hip.

So when the ponies kick Gilda out, they're not just rejecting her, they're rejecting shitty, pandering kids cartoons in favor of their own approach, where the show is built on characterization and good writing instead of catchphrases.

Also, Gilda is a bitch and she deserved what she got.

Gilda just has a narrow set of things she actually enjoy, and gets very defensive about it.
She likes hanging out with Dash because in 90% of the time, Dash does things Gilda likes, like slacking off, or messing things up intentionally or unintentionally. Problem mostly arose when she had to meet and stay with Dash's other friends. back in flight school, she would probably just decline all those party invitations, but since she was the one visiting that time, she just couldn't avoid it. She's not a terrible friends by nature, it's just that she's too closeted on herself. in most conditions she's fine. in the particular conditon of this episode, she was a living nightmare.
Probably a bit of a cultural shock, too. I can see dash adapt to rougher areas like high schools. But ponyville was just too sweet for a socially battle hardened Gilda.

No, seriously, that's canonical, Faust said so. All the ponies are magical in their own way.
The best way I've figured to explain it is that their magic is limited to changing how gravity effects them, hence the inherent ability to walk on clouds, but still being able to take a full force ram from Applejack without being crushed. Still means they need their wings for propulsion, though. It even makes sense within the show - in bridle gossip, Dash had no problem flying, just steering, even though logically upsidown wings should make it pretty much impossible.
