They are NOT rare compared to 'the most popular gemstones,' assuming one means things like emeralds, rubies, and sapphires. They are certainly less common than things like amethyst and jade, but I doubt that that's what is generally meant by 'most popular gemstones.'
It is true that, by carat, they are one of the most EXPENSIVE gemstones, but that's because diamonds (thanks to their associations with marriage and purity) are in far greater demand than most other stones of equal or greater scarcity. Additionally, supply of diamonds is controlled by a handful of powerful cartels which work co-operatively to ensure high diamond prices. |
