Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup is your best bet. It has a good tutorial, it's less dickishly hard than some others, but not by any means easy. It also has an excellent tileset mode if that's your thing.

I think Celestia's role seems to be mostly ceremonial now because she's been around so long, making sure it all runs smoothly, that most of the time she simply doesn't need to interfere.

The Aristocracy is probably distracted with endless ceremonies and banquets and other social gatherings that Celestial had made traditions of hundreds of years ago, and they've been going on so long that she doesn't need to check on them either.
