Nick just keeps them going as long as possible. That's why Avatar is getting a new series and Spongebob has been going for ten years.

The reason for the idea was that in a small speaking cameo the writers could establish what her state of mind was.

It was suggested they could establish her as absent minded or daydreaming hence her mark and her eyes.
