Derpy being an acknowledged character doesn't make her not a background pony. Compare Simpsons, which grew additional background characters and fleshed out existing, one-shot background characters over the seasons.

Expect more Derpy gags which don't directly confront the mane cast.

Derpy won't be the only one to get more love. Assuming a similar development budget to season one, there'll be enough for a dozen or so fleshed out existing background characters. Then more unique incidental ponies for crowd shots: new combinations of new body parts, physiques and complexion.

For an example of what they'll probably end up doing with Derpy, look at Lyra. She shows up in crowds and fills the requirements of a backgrounder, but she also has several expressions and poses all her own.

Hmm, this news is a bit disturbing. I know that Faust was vital to even getting this off the ground in the first place and the concepts and characters were more or less her creation. But since the "birth" of the series, just how involved has she been in the creative process? I actually liked the last seasons of Dexter... from a storyboarding standpoint. The jokes, the references... Susan. It was a little more low-key, but still enjoyable.
What I did not enjoy was the way they shifted all the art to drab brownish colours when the original artwork used to be so colourful and fantastical. Who the fuck made that decision? It was like raping my eyes.
Ego Trip was still the best, though. The series could have fucking ended there.

PPG wasn't bad. Though sometimes in the late episodes the girls seemed particularly vindictive, taking egoticentric glee in beating up the villains, and I always felt like they needed to get their shit slapped when that happened.

Anyway, I'm withholding judgment. Ponies could be just as awesome without Lauren. It could even be better. Or it could suck balls. It depends on the writers. The ones who did the bulk of the episodes in Season One seemed to do a pretty good job, so I'm optimistic about the second season, at least.
