Has their ever been a recorded incident of a real little girl liking MPL:FiM? The ponies not looking like real horses have to hurt it in that regard. In my limited experience with children it also seems they don't respond to super cute stuff either - no parental instinct and whatnot - they tend to want to pretend to do grown-up stuff more than anything. She'd punctured a lung, but was patched up for that and would heal in time. But her left wing had suffered severe damage, and had lost several key structural bones in the crash. It was beyond repair. They were very, very sorry, but they felt they had to take the measure they did to save her.

Rainbow Dash stood up for a pony she barely knew, and she paid the ultimate price for it that day.

The nobles expect things to be a certain way. If Celestia wants to remain in power, she has to make sure those things happen for them. There's a bunch. Some are better than others. Look up 'The Conversion Bureau' on EqD. The main author's story is pretty bad because of mary sue/self insert/shipping with main cast, but other people have done different, shorter stories within the setting which are considerably better.

I think there's quite a few actually but as far as I've seen they've always been chastised for being too self-insert-y.

I don't really think a story like that feeling like a self-insert is a bad thing, personally, because that's one of those things where your readers are more likely to enjoy it if they can relate to the character (and let's be honest, a lot of us are pretty much the same damn person when you get down to brass tax), but that's just my opinion.
