Hey bronies, I've got a convention coming up and I'm inclined to do a panel about our little coltural phenomenon we've got going here. I want to talk about what it is that makes the show so popular, and the two ideas I'm most considering are "laughing at laughing" and the harem theory.

By laughing at laughing I mean this: You know how you'll watch it, and it's pretty funny and has solid cartoony plots and antics, so you laugh. And at the same time you realize that you, a grown-ish man (most of the time in this context), just enjoyed an episode of a cartoon originally made to sell toys to little girls. The act of laughing is itself as or more funny than what made you laugh in the first place.

The harem theory, which I hear talked about a lot more, is just the idea that some guys like it because they like the characterization of a particular pony because it's a lot like their ideal girlfriend. And let's be fair here: a girl like Fluttershy would be pretty damn adorable.

Of course I'm also going to tell people about how the 18-24 year old male fanbase has influenced and built off of the show by bringing up the numerous games, some of the fan characters like Dr. Whooves, and of course, our pride and joy, Derpy.

Is there anything else you think I should talk about? Any disagreement with my explanations? I don't want to poorly represent the community.

I think the most interesting psychological aspect of this is grown men enjoying a cartoon that society tells them they're not supposed to like. Faust created this show for little girls, that wasn't stupid, and innane, and overly juvenile, and insulting to the gender. Little girls are very stupid, tv producers say, and they like lots of pink, and they like to be treated like toddlers, and they like tea parties where every girl is smiling and nothing ever happens. Faust said fuck to that.

And in doing so she's also created a show appealing to young men, who have been told all their lives that they're not supposed to like shows with bright primaries colors, and ponies, and plots involving fashion, and where all the characters are female.

Faust has crushed two stereotypes with one stone. I think that's where the real story is.

It's just a STEM (systems technology, etc) course. Only a basic level one, though. The professor is an interesting guy, the final is a 2 page, double-spaced essay on what you plan to do with your life, and how will technology help that to happen.
The only way you can really fail is if you don't turn it in, or you don't write at least two pages.
As for writing, I tend to do better with some sort of background noise. Music, the TV, a radio... Just something other than nothing. If it's too quiet I get distracted incredibly easily. It's almost depressing how easily I can just forget what I'm doing the moment something catches my attention. But, we've got a nice porch swing I can use, so I can at least get a little sun while I write, and I've got a decent library of music on my mp3 player. So unless I'm called away for something, I could probably sit out there for a good couple hours.

i mean just look at /a/. Its filled with people who have waifu's. Pretty much people who are so scorned by love, or too unsure of themselves that they decided to find happiness in 2d idealized constructs. Its pretty much one of the main reasons behind the idea of moe.

I don't really mind it, since none of it is negative and the characters all show overwhelming positive traits (hard working, confidence, athleticism, patience, etc. )

Honestly though the fact that the ponies all together showed courage and FOUGHT a MANTICORE in the second episode made me respect them. any medium sized creature that decides that it and its 5 friends are all it needs to fight a fucking lion scorpion monster has brass balls of steel and deserves respect.

By comic colors, you mean the "cuts" style of coloring used in mainstream comics? Because that's where fades are used. If you mean the hard edges, that's what I call "cel" style, since it replicates the painting done on animation cels. I do cuts style myself on a lot of my work, so if you want to know how to do that, I can give you a pointer or two. Cel style is a little easier to do, but more unforgiving when it comes to mistakes. Minimalism tends to point out errors more advertantly since there's a lot less to take in.

Let's see... I'd mess a bit with the shading in the back of Gilda's head. Specially because it seems like the light source actually comes from that side a bit. Also it looks too straight.

Dash's tail... I'd put the shadow more below, like you did with the bullies (the front bully has too much shadow on top of the hair, I guess). Overall the look pretty good. Tweak a bit the shading in RD's hair... that's about it, I guess.
