ok, so today was my first time using SAI with my tablet. I made this as a request. (I don't normally do shipping pic requests, but it was for a good friend so I felt inclined.) I don't know a good way to color in SAI yet, I tried messing around with the tools, but the air brush just seemed more effective. Thoughts, critiques?

Colouring is down to you but airbrushing tends to make things easy mode, my advice would be to use the regular pen tool with a large brush, you can try the regular paint brush and mess around with the blending options if you want.

But a great way to learn is to experiment with blocks of colour that work together, cel shading would probably be a good way to start figuring out how to give something volume as it is very simple.

It's dangerous to go alone, take this tutorial.

Gotcha. All I can offer is that age can be pretty deceptive in terms of size, especially with animation having one generic model for fillys (is there an animation model for adolescents or teens? Are the main cast now considered young adults?) Cheerlie may still have a few years edge over Rarity, who according my opinion is the oldest of the mane cast by a small margin. If they were in the same class, their ages are clearly fairly similar, at least. Ponyville is a small town, so they probably don't have enough foals to justify having many classes of same-aged kids, but even so, that they're in the same class puts a fairly heavy limitation on how far their ages could diverge. I've mentioned it on a thread before, but old school mlp is actually how I taught myself to draw. Granted I suffered from drawing monstrously huge legs and tiny heads for YEARS before I got some sense and also started drawing from the world around me. I was frustrated and didn't know how to get what I wanted out of my head and onto paper, and I wasn't allowed to draw so I couldn't take classes.

I went and found the easiest style I could (which was mlp) and used that to teach myself without stressing about making things perfect.

If you're trying to learn how forms work, don't worry about clutter. You shouldn't be trying to create a clean, pretty picture right off the bat. Sketchy is fine. Don't get too attached to your sketches and try to make them perfect, but don't throw any of them away either. Date them in the corner or on the back of the paper and stick them in a folder or a box or something. In a week or a month pull one back out and compare it to something recently done.

Using basic shapes helps you evaluate size, curvature, angles, and placement. Using construction lines help you figure out how limbs bend. You might just draw a pony leg and for some reason it looks off. Chances are if it had bones inside of it they'd be bent in a way that's impossible, and part of you knows this even if you can't quite explain it. So draw skinny little lines as a guide for leg bones.

FiM ponies are made of very basic shapes. The heads are literally a circle. A circle with bits sticking out of it. So the easiest way to draw a pony head is not to trace around the muzzle, hair, and ears, but to draw a circle and then stick that stuff on.

If this is an argument against the necessity of basic shapes, it is theoretically possible to skip them without sacrificing quality if you're crazy familiar with the character you're doing and all around good. Some of those old-school Disney animators who'd been drawing Mickey Mouse for decades could whip a good Mickey out without basic shapes, but for the other 99% of artists/subject matter, basic shapes are worth the trouble.

Taking this from another angle, if you simply can't draw the basic shapes in the first place, then you won't have better results skipping them and going to the even more complex final forms. It'd be like saying that learning to ride a bike is too hard, so you'll learn to ride a unicycle instead.

Finally, if you have the hand-eye coordination to write legibly, you have the coordination to draw. Short of rare serious physical problems, the problem is almost certainly in deciding where the lines should go, not your hand having a hard time putting them where you want. Hand-eye coordination is the easiest part of drawing.

Rubber hose limbs are great ways to add expression, however realistic limbs combined with these will set off alarms in your brain. If it is at least somewhat realistic, conservation of mass will exist (squash/stretch).

A lot of people like those putty-like rubber erasers, but personally, I've never cared for them much. Unless they're absolutely fresh and pristine, they seem to smudge more than erase, and usually that isn't what I'm going for. I'm all about the white vinyl erasers for the most part, particularly Sakura brand. They're not the easiest kind to find, but they erase the cleanest, with the least paper wear, and the one I have has lasted me for years. You can't mold them like the grey rubber ones, but I never need to do highly precise erasing anyway. If I erase at all, it's either at the roughing in the forms stage, or erasing all pencil entirely after inking. Though usually I either ink on another piece of paper entirely via the ol' lightbox or do it digitally after scanning the pencil sketch, so large-scale erasing is very infrequent.

And yeah, the pink kind is garbage.

Do you remember learning to swim? Learning to ride a bicycle? Learning to drive a car? Learning to play an instrument?

Typically learning these tasks proceeds like so:

Underestimating the difficulty before you've started.
Overestimating the difficulty once you've begun.
Finding it completely natural and automatic once you've learned.

Drawing is pretty much the same. If it seems too difficult then just remember that once upon a time you couldn't do those other tasks either.

It won't feel natural out of the box but you get used to it pretty fast.

Digital art is a mixed blessing. In some ways it's beginner-friendly: You can draw in pencil, then create a new layer and ink, then get rid of your rough pencils with no trouble at all. And you can do flat colors and colored lines with minimal effort.

The problem is that it's not as intuitive as using real materials. In this way it's beginner-unfriendly, because when you're trying to learn the basics and also trying to figure out a complex new toolset it's information overload.

So I suggest working in pencil out of ancient-as-hell textbooks, then investing in a tablet when you're already comfortable drawing.
