Chapter 1: The Whole Story
It was a fine day in Ponyville. Twilight Sparkle was sitting outside the library one day. Spike returned from his errands and asked what she was up to. “I’m waiting for a special package from Celestia. It should be here any minute now.” Just then a certain cross-eyed pegasus landed (more like crashed) right in front of Twilight. “You must have the package.” Twilight said. After an uncomfortably long pause, Twilight had the unpleasant sensation of a package violating her oral cavity before the mailpony flew off. Spike grabbed the package. “OOOOOH! I wonder what it is!” the young dragon said while he tore open the package. “Be careful Spike!” Before she could grab it away from him, Spike held up a round jewel with a single star in it and a letter. “Hmmm….My faithful student Twilight….Sphere of Equistria….safekeeping….don’t let it fall into evil hands….trigger the end of the world blah blah blah. Seems like it’s one of the most powerful magical artifacts in Equistria. The Princess must really trust you to let you hold on to something so important.”

Of the group, only she, Spike, and Applejack were fast enough to get inside. Baal caught Rarity, Rainbow Dash, and Fluttershy. Of these, he ate Rarity and Rainbow Dash instantly, tossing them in his horrific maw. Futtershy was forced to watch, bound in one of Baal’s tentacles. She tried to look away, but the screams of Rarity and Rainbow Dash pierced her brain. However, they did not last long as Baal’s teeth must have crushed their jaws and skulls in one single sickening crunch, after which all was silent.

Fluttershy (or at least her top half) violently flailed about and screamed in pain. Her mind was so consumed by pain and fear that she couldn’t even think anymore. She had become like those animals she so loved, mindless. Her screaming and flailing got weaker and weaker as she quickly bled out. She died with her eyes open.

Okay, so here's my very first awful attempt at digital inking and coloring. Things went badly as expected. Can anyone clarify something for me: I did the lines as solid colors, and was under the impression that setting a layer to multiply meant I could color underneath them. But except for completely black lines the colors kept blending.

Anyway I think I may try traditional inking on the same pencil sketch and compare results. I know the lines would be a fuckload smoother for one. I am not at all comfortable with tablet drawing yet.

Tips? Comments? General critique? Personal anecdotes about the time spent acclimating themselves to these tools so I have some reference as to how long I can expect to suck at this before it gets better?

Well I've pretty much given up on working with scanned images for life. Mine always come out terrible unless I retrace the whole image in-program.
I use a pen tool to draw my lines on their own layer, Stroke Path is okay for simple lines, or go over the lines twice and Fill Path. (see image for what I got from Stroke Path)
After that I just dump in the color on another layer below the lines, making sure there's no missed spot near the lines. I barely touch layer styles or transparency.
...but I'm no expert on the subject, so there's surely better ways to produce good stuff.
