Birds can mate on the wing. It looks kinda like this picture, except the birds have their butts pulled together. I find it hard to imagine a couple of horses pulling off a similar feat in a way that wouldn't critically interfere with the wings of at least one of them.
Also, birds are quick. They don't waste time basting each others parts. This is good, because during the mating part of the mating flight they are basically falling instead of flying. I do not see horses being as quick about things.
So, to summarize, probably not. Ground banging would be far easier. |
