I don't think the episode ever fell at all. While obviously not quite up to the level of perfection of Cutie Mark Chronicles, this was a very solid A episode in my opinion.

The beginning was great, with just a touch of CMC, some Scoot/Dash growth (lol scootabuse), and the night sky's just so pretty~ Plus, Rarity being super sweet to Spike even though she knows he has a crush on her, it's too cute.

Owlicious. Seriously? I know it's a play on that guy's name but that's THE BEST NAME A CHARACTER HAS EVER HAD. Owlicious.

Spike being awesome, Spike being Spike. Spike being a moustache-twirling olden-days villain. Too good, TOO good.

Kickass dragon action, that forest escape scene seems like something straight out of a potential FiM video game.

Well that was good. This episode sits around mid-tier for me. It was highly enjoyable, but compared to some of the other's? Whoo boy, no contest. It had some great stuff in it though, evil Spike, adorable owl, a dragon chase through the Everfree forest, awesome, a good watch, pretty solid but there's better.

Also the Scootabuse that's going to come out of this will be neigh unstoppable.

What it actually does is establish a Scootaloo and Rainbow Dash relationship, which is foreshadowing a Scootaloo and Rainbow Dash episode in season 2. They have an actually abusive relationship where RD exploits Scootaloo. It's going to work itself out with a happy moral at the end. But this is why Faust was telling people that she wouldn't make a good sister.
