Okay, we were discussing pony ages in the last thread.

It occurs to me, as I mentioned in the last thread, that Applejack spent some time in Manehattan- enough time to learn to talk and act like a proper Manehattan socialite. That must have taken months, given Applejack's normal behavior. She surely transferred schools.

Which means that she and Rarity could be the same age, and even in the same class in Ponyville, only she was in Manehattan when the Rainboom hit, and that's why we don't see her with the others in Rarity's class when Rarity gets her cutie mark.

For example a Chekhov's Gun is an object that appears or is mentioned that seems to have very little significance at the time but is brought back or revealed to be REALLY important latter on.

A Checkhov's Gunman is the same thing, but with a person instead of an object.

They are names applied to archetypes, in a sense. And then some.
