I agree that it could be seen in bad taste, the episode I mean, because the native americans were on the receiving end of a massive, manifest destiny flavored shit sandwich, but to call it a genocide, is to be ignorant. If you want that, you need to look to south america and the exploits of the Spanish. What happened in North America was a typical series of imperial style expansions via a series of wars against the native inhabitants, ultimately culminating in their displacement and forced relocation and assimilation. The same thing pretty much every nation existing today is guilty of at some point in its history. Most of the US based tribes are still existent however, scattered about the country on reservations.
Injust and shouldn't be glossed over by revisionist history? You bet. Genocide? No more so than what the British did establishing their empire abroad, or every other colonial power that ever fought a war against indigenous peoples for territorial gain. Which was all of them. |
