Theory: The last episode of the season will be a mirror of the first.
Twilight Sparkle will start spotting signs that something bad is going to happen. Old clues in old books, matched up with astronomical observations; four stars, circling the moon. As before, she is distracted by the rest of the mane cast as they prepare for the Gala, but this time she willingly disregards what she's learned to be with them. Time runs out, and they go to the gala; in the evening of which, Celestia reveals that for the first time in a thousand years, Princess Luna will raise the moon and bring the night. But Luna does not actually appear in the episode. As the last buildup is made, the curtain draws back and... she's gone.
Just as everyone is about to recover from the shock, four bursts of light descend from the sky and burst on the stage to reveal four threatening-looking god ponies, like the princesses, who each bear an astrological star symbol on their flank. They declare that they were the ones who set Luna free and who have now - after she reneged on their bargain - returned her to the moon. If Celestia ever wants to see her sister again, she will bring the night and let it stay... forever.
