The truth is, FiM is a show within a show. Its a sitcom produced by Studio Canterlot, and the "background ponies" are just recurring extras, members of the guild. Its why you see them everywhere.

I have mixed feelings about this episode. I think that the whole "special connection" thing, if they wanted to go there, would've been better done if everyone BUILT OFF OF EACH OTHER and weren't all related to Rainbow Dash's Sonic Rainboom specifically.

Like, maybe Pinkie could've seen Fluttershy's joy and decided "Hey, I want to cause THAT!" Twilight's magical explosion could've opened the rock with the gems. Etc.

Of course, I know they did it because Rainbow Dash is probably the best selling pony, and don't get me wrong - I like Dash just fine. But to make ALL the build up be about her and how she caused "everything" is kinda meh. Especially since, if they're all avatars of various aspects of Friendship, they should all be equal.

Pinkie Pie lived on the out skirts of town and only did rock farming work (if here story is true), most likely home schooled. Pinkie is the same age because while she seems immature and vagrant, she actually is almost always two steps ahead. Clearly she knows her way around stuff, enough to understand things the others cant. Its hard to place her, but she clearly isnt old as she's spritely and energetic, but she isnt terribly young as she has a way of interacting and assessing that just wouldnt be capable of someone quite as young. She's also surprisingly calm i.e.she doesnt get angry

R.D is hotheaded, over confident, self righteous and assumes she knows shit she doesnt. Incredibly youthful and energetic, she jumps to conclusions and shows little sign of maturity. She screams kid, I dont need to go into it. She also gets on well with Pinkie Pie, they both young, they both good mates. pinkie Pie gets on with Twi, their youth bonds them.

Same with Aj/Rarity-they are mature enough to eventually resolve their differences and compromise, a trait not owned by the others, bar pinkie and FS.
