There's little evidence to back this up, but one BIG thing sticks out to me: when Nightmare Moon shows up, she's speaking the same language as everyone else. Heck, she doesn't even have an archaic accent. In the real world, even a few decade's time is enough to hopelessly date one's vocabulary. A thousand years ago, English didn't even exist, and none of the romance languages was being spoken in a form recognizable to modern speakers (don't know anything about eastern or african languages, but I'm guessing the same applies). If there's been literally NO change in equestrian language in the last thousand years, that tells me that the society as a whole is incredibly stagnant.
