Drawing requires effort. To render a pony believale, to make a pony seem likeable as an image is a feat no amount of text can prove, and to do so in an original style independent of the original show's style is another feat altogether. No one's going to remember a slash fanfic five to ten years down the road, but a fanart has some greater degree of longevity.

And another thing. Background ponies ? Seriously ? Regardless: draw from life. Draw a lot. I have a sketchbook that is on my desk all the time. If a webpage is loading slowly, I sketch something. If I'm playing a game, I do gesture sketches during cutscenes. I spend time studying muscles and bones and learning how the insides work so I can draw the outsides. I easily fill anywhere from 5-15+ pages in a sketchbook every day. You dont need to go that crazy (I work as an artist. Drawing is a big priority in my life.) but you definitely need to do more.

What I think you need to do is learn to write for you. Starting over wouldn't help. I'd be miserable if I relied on the input of other people to know whether or not I like something. If you write something and you dont know if you like it, shelve it for three days and reread it. Or a week, or three weeks. The pony fandom isnt going anywhere (probably.) And having distance will give you a better opportunity to read it objectively.

You should be able to write something you like. You should like it and be able to accept that not everyone will. You should work towards that goal, not towards pleasing everyone.

And, as much as Sweetie Belle's singing, the whole mae cast can sing. Even Fluttershy, who was in charge of singing in the first episode, did not have singing as a cutie mark. Having a primary talent doesn't excluse a secondary talent/efficiency, which might just come out of good ol' practice (for instance, Scootaloo might just become a better singer a fter a few years. Cherilee asks Twilight to help with a more troublesome unicorn. Cut to Sweetie Belle trying to color some paper, and the whole school just goes up in marshmallows or something else cute.

But remember, Twilight's gift is magic, and she was trained by Celestia. So she ends up being like a less abusive, but still demanding Rainbow Dash. Sweetie Belle eventually runs away INTO THE EVERFREE FOREST, and Twilight has to go save her. Sweetie Belle ends up saving Twilight with her marshmallow spell.

Lesson being that different people take to things at different speeds, but we should always help each other.
