So to the people who were complaining about google docs in the last thread: what's the problem with them?

I mean, it's a simple, easy, free way to put your writing out on the web. I've heard the whole "Google owns anything you write on there" complaint, but come on; we're writing MLP fanfiction, it's not like we could ever publish it or anything anyway.

Is there something I'm missing?

I'm not a fan of the doctor. We simply don't mesh. It's like we were meant for two different times or something.

For some people it's a hassle to be directed away from the site. It's better just to click an image and read the jpg story. They're also much shorter. It's a lot to ask people to even read a short fanfic. Googledocs stories are often huge. Somebody mentioned HFPS above, and his Zecora story is a 20+ page epic. It's really good, but few people are willing to read something that big.

Shouldn't one be able to appreciate writing and the author's work for what they are, regardless of the medium that we see them in? Besides, it's not much different than an image; clicking the image still opens a new window, taking away from the thread. Googledocs are just a bigger, actual text format to present things in. But then my favorite stories right now (besides Forever is Forever) are all unfinished (Arddun Lleuad, Luna's Goodwill Tour, and Memories), so maybe I'm just really weird.

I don't know, I do use 4chan+ so to me everything seems very continuous in threads. I suppose though that I'm not from /co/ so i'm not as used to how people feel about fictions as much here.

Google docs is fine, the layout is good and it offers good formatting. It's not, however, a fanfiction database, you can't sort, search, or group. Derpy is a background pony only who had some silly eyes drawn on her in the first episode. She got her eyes derped up in later episodes after she gained a stunning amount of popularity. It was an easy edit to do for episodes that were already being finished off. A few days later I was visiting y girlfriend. While she was in class, I started watching the first episode at the university library, but got too self conscious. Two days later I was drawn back to it for some reason.

I can't speak for all the shipping friends. I can speak for probably some number of them.

One would be to try and explore the characters more. One thing everyone criticizes of fanfictions is how well they portray characters. They could hear them say the lines; they could see the character acting like that over a number of years; that idea works well with their personality, etc. So they just expand this to love and write it. That's why I do it; it's more of character personality practice writing, but I think the setting of Equestria is fun enough for fanfics anyway.

I'm sure others find that there's fun in romantic writing itself, or like seeing the depth of characters as they are met with something as intense as love. I'm not really sure either way; I've NEVER thought about shipping before MLP, and I used to read fanfics pretty often. Now it's one of my favorite subjects to read about (at least when it's written well).
