No, no, the person Rainman was based on was definitely autistic, and I think Rainman was supposed to be autistic too.

There are a lot of different symptoms of autism and there are verying degrees to which it can develop, but one of the milder forms is Aspergers. Aspergers usually just manifests as a difficulty in understanding people's facial expressions, which creates social awkwardness.

People can, of course, have compound issues, and it isn't unusual for a person to have other mental disabilities if they also have Aspergers.

I doubt most psychiatrist diagnose accurately. I have been diagnosed with a lot of things (from schizophrenia to dyslexia, from aspergers to ADHD) and hardly ever did/do I show symptoms of given affliction.
