1. Luna became Nightmare Moon because of the hate in her heart.

2. Celestia tried to reason with her sister, but Luna refused to lower the moon.

I'm going to go on a random tangent here, as I've always been wondering about why Celestia and Luna have two different forms.

In the intro to the first ep, Luna has her smaller second form, the blue one, and Celstia seems to be similar with a pink mane. Luna transforms into her Nightmare Moon form only after "the bitterness" transforms her. Celestia uses the Elements of Harmony to fight Nightmare Moon, signifying that Celestia doesn't have enough magic in her current form to fight her alone. Only after Nightmare Moon is banished does Celstia take on the form she has in the series. Luna comes back with little power as her first form, while Celestia keeps hers, implying perhaps Luna doesn't have control over the moon? Or at least complete control? Was that ever established that she did come back to power?

Also it implies there are two forms to each pony, their regular form and their "goddess" form.

Also, I like to entertain the idea that the goddess forms are horses, implying that horses do exist but you must retain a lot of magic to become one. I mean, Celestia is a lot larger and well-proportioned, traits most breeds of horses exhibit over ponies.

Then there's the matter of them both having wings and a horn, which must be a neccessity for them ruling, and... where was I going with this again?

That's right, I didn't notice until now that only one posesses the form at a time. I mean, who knows what happened to Celestia when she disappeared during Nightmare's return? Maybe Nightmare Moon drained her power in order to return to her goddess form. It took Twilight and five other ponies using the EoH (these seem to have a key purpose in defeating Nightmare Moon), to return her to her smaller form. Only then did Celestia show up.

Rarity mentions during the Gala episode that she wants to meet Princess Celestia's nephew.

Yet Celestia only has one relative, and it's Luna. Who has been banished to the moon for a thousand years.

This leads to one of several conclusions:
1) Celestia has other relatives who are given no rulership (banished?)
2) Luna has had a child since her return (which would make Rarity a pedophile)
