I like Troll Celestia, because that just seems to work so well.

Canon wise though, she'll always just be a bit of a trickster.

I personally like the notion that Celestia is kind and motherly, but only if she is also a bit of a prankster when she thinks she can get away with it. It makes her an individual rather than a generic mentor-figure.

There's plenty of evidence, too. The "gotcha" is obvious of course, but also: Pretending Philomena didn't look like she had anything wrong with her? Playing along for a few moments when she "died"? And in other episodes there are hints as well: having disappearing ink in her room, or even in the first two episodes when she just went "lol make some friends" rather than explaining things to Twilight.

I like her that way.

That said, there seems to be a huge discrepancy between how the audience perceives Celestia and how the ponies do. Perhaps that's just the way it is with royalty in any setting, I don't know. I don't think that Twilight's reaction to Fluttershy was anything other than drawing from that, and not an indication that Celestia is some kind of despot.

I like the idea posted above that she's just a bit bored, and after a millennia simply enjoys stirring things up a little.

you know something I noticed: Poor fluttershy seems to get jerked around by the magical creatures a lot. I mean sure she's not defenseless, but I mean every one she's encountered has basically been a dick to her on sight, and most of them have pushed her into getting angry or upset.

Granted maybe that's just the nature of magical creatures in this series in general: They're tough to deal with, and she just gets the brunt of it 'cause she's the animal expert.

So, episode idea time:

Ponyville holds a pet talent show. Everyone has a pet except Rainbow Dash. She tries to find a pet but none of them work out. Dash finds mystery animal that she doesn't like at first, trying to find something cooler, but grows attached to it by the end.

Also, Spike is begrudgingly entered as Twilight's pet, just for shits and giggles. Angel refuses to perform without proper compensation and legal documents over royalties on his likeness should he win.
