Guys, I'd just like to pause a moment and make a note of how great the music is in this show.

I just noticed because I was watching the new ep again, and I noticed that Celestia gets a little chorus when she first gets the camera's focus. The show's only used that for "mystical" things (first use of magic in the show, elements of harmony, NMM's appearance), so it's a nice little thematic thing for her, keeping that same air that she's not just a monarch while never actually saying it. It balances well against the more "classy" harpsichord tones used later when she's drinking the tea.

Good music needs to be appreciated in a show, particularly when it's not normally noticed (that's part of what makes it good), since it plays such a huge part in atmosphere and setting. There are otherwise terrible shows that earned their nostalgia wings on their music.

It was pretty obvious. They were introducing mythological creatures all the time and the phoenix was one of the most famous they had yet to show. Plus, it was pretty easy to imagine that Fluttershy would try desperately to care for a phoenix, which was steadily dying, without realizing that it was supposed to. Fluttershy being run ragged trying to take care of something beyond her control was already established as a good plotline when she babysat the CMC.

I don't think anyone realized how fucking ugly the bird was going to end up being, or how awesome it was going to look once it resurrected.

My reckoning is, Celestia is really nice now, but she wasn't always. Since Lauren said on her DA that Luna was "aged" by some kind of evil magic, and Celestia appeared the same size as her in the prologue, we know that Celestia actually grew from a more youthful form into the one she has now over the course of her rule.

I think a lonely young deity-monarch going through adolescence was likely to have been a bit tetchy at times, don't you? That would explain why Twilight's so nervous - she's read the histories.
