Twilight's freaking out seemed odd, but then I thought, well, she's probably read up on her history, maybe that sort of thing happened in the past, with some other ruler... then I remembered THERE HAVEN'T BEEN ANY OTHER RULERS.

If Celestia never banishes or imprisons people, ponies wouldn't even know what those concepts were. Fluttershy didn't think it was possible, so probably Celestia hasn't done it in a long time, but Twilight knows. Her immediate reaction and then "well, maybe not" is probably her remembering that Celestia doesn't do that NOW, but her continued nerves indicate that she thinks it's still possible. Also that Celestia is a veyr beloved mother figure for her and Twilight cares what she thinks.

With the revelation from Lauren that Celestia actually started as a child and "grew up" during her thousand-year reign, it's perfectly conceivable that there might have been more troublesome periods in equestria's history.

Do not forget that despite what we criticize of MLP, it is deep down a show aimed specifically at pre-teen girls. It's clear virtually every episode featured has a certain lesson young viewers should take after, which is executed very well compared to other shows like Horseland, Strawberry Shortcake, or the Barbie videos.
I don't think Lauren or Hasbro would consider making MLP being more serious just to cater to the adult audience. So don't be surprised if Season 2 is going to be more of the same. But as long as they keep this kind of writing intact, it won't be as tiring as Phineas and Ferb.

At the end of the day, it's My Little Pony. That people are watching it at all and liking it to any degree is amazing enough, especially given the previous track record of the franchise.

She does have a point, but that's not what worries me.

She said that she "didn't create it for little girls", she "created it for little girls and their parents". Given the episodes we've seen so far, what worries me is whether or not the show may in fact be biased in one direction or another. I've said this before, but while some episodes felt more like a My Little Pony episode should, others have felt more like generic, sitcom-style episodes that could be seen elsewhere (especially Call of the Cutie), and just simply aren't funny or necessary. This is esepcially so when such episodes try to shoehorn a moral lesson in simply because it "has" to have one. To me, this would suggest that this show (or at least those episodes) might be more for the parents to entertain their families with. There's a difference between this and truly being family-oriented, but I go on.

In any case, I'm certainly glad she put that person in their place.

adventure time is a wacky "ironic" show made for children that uses irony to mask its deep-rooted moral basis and extremely formulaic plots.

MLP:FiM is a genuinely funny and subversive show that is ostensibly made for children but has a lot of funny jokes and is actually not all that (stereotypically) moral at all. MLP producers follow what's funny and clever, Adventure Time is on the other hand is more like what old MLP was like.
