Okay sure the animation's pretty good and the ponies are kind of adorable in a "candy-coated for ten year old girls" way, but I'm not seeing the clever jokes or the well-rounded characters. Everyone's just an archetype and fulfills the necessary role for the arc of the particular episode.

I just watched an episode where a dragon is living nearby and breathing smoke on to the village. The story was a predictable "Scaredy-cat character is scared the whole way, at the end is brave to help her friends" arc, none of the jokes were especially clever or surprising...

Yeah it's just not clicking at all. More to the point I simply can't understand the appeal, which is particularly strange.

I'm kind of sick of kids cartoons that seem to wish they weren't kids' cartoons. Too many recent shows keep throwing out self-aware gags constantly, and it ends up feeling like some sort of inferiority complex. Like the kid we all know from school who's always making self-deprecating jokes, and at first it's funny, but eventually we realize he kind of hates himself.

MLP doesn't give a shit about being hip or trendy. It knows it's a show for little girls, and it is PROUD of it. It uses that as a starting point to appeal to a much wider audience. It is basically Lauren Faust saying "Hey everyone! This show is for girls! And you're going to love it anyway! Just try not to!"

Favorite: Over a Barrel

-It has the best balance of action, adventure, and comedy of any episode in the series. DAT TRAIN ROBBERY.

-It shows us another side of Equestria and that the setting is more versitle than just a typical fantasy world with ponies.

-Pinkie's song. Or rather, the way the characters react to Pinkie's song, which is the total opposite of how that would play out on almost any other cartoon.

Least Favorite: Boast Busters

-Trixie is completely one-dimensional, to the point that acres of fanfics (some quite awesome) have been written to try and explain her completely cliche and downright stupid actions onstage.

-Twilight acts like a complete moron throughout the episode. She goes around using magic all the time, but suddenly thinks everyone is going to hate her for it? Even worse, she lets her friends be publicly humiliated rather than use magic in front of them.

-The ending was telegraphed the second Trixie began bragging about the Ursa.

-No Pinkie Pie or Fluttershy. This would normally not be a big deal, except the episode REALLY needed their energy and cuteness, respectively, to take the edge off.

When she stood up to the manticore I thought she was awesome, but then 5 episodes passed with her being a wimp again (especially in Griffon) and I stopped liking her. But then Dragonshy happened, and then Stare Master, and suddenly she was one of my favorites.

Exactly. Writing Dash as a bisexual swinger with loose morals who is a little bit too self-centered for her own good has piles of opportunity for ironic character comedy. I can't stop reading store is about Gilda being mad at the world because she came out of the closet to the wrong people, and I want to see just how deep a hole she digs before she collapses into a pile of self-loathing and tears. Sad Luna gives me giggles, especially when she's being trolled by her sister.

Spike's excited to go to his first dragon poetry meet. Twilight wants to see what he's written, but Spike keeps it to himself and says it's an epic tale of manly men doing manly things, nothing that her girly sensibilities would really like.

At the jam, it turns out he's written an embarrassingly sappy love letter declaring how much he loves all his pony friends. The dragons laugh him off the mountain, and he runs home to the library with tears in his eyes. He doesn't talk about what happened, of course, but he's all too glad to let Twilight baby him for a bit to make him feel better.
