A little trolling really helps the immortally go by. Girl's gotta have some hobbies, after all. She may style herself as a normal sun goddess, but she's really a prankster at heart. She's kind like Dash or Pinkie in that respect, except that her jokes often have a set up time measured in decades. This impacts the humor value for a lot of people (since needed a bachelors degree in history just to get the premise somewhat limits the audience) but everyone laughs anyway because she's the queen and a god and HAVE YOU SEEN JUST HOW BIG SHE IS SHE'S LIKE TWICE THE SIZE OF BIG MAC AND HE HAS THE GLANDULAR PROBLEMS. So they all laugh.

Her jokes really are pretty good if you are able to get them thought. Totally worth the set up.

True, but with a tone shift like the OP asked about, you'd naturally change the tone of the flaws and challenges they'd be dealing with.

When you're writing specifically for children and to be kid-friendly, the problems need to be very soft versions of real problems, all the edges shaved off and a generally positive resolution to be found. When you start to aim a little higher on the age brackets it's safer to introduce a little ambiguity and let your audience work things out for themselves, so you can deal with problems just a shade closer to real life.

That's pretty much the essence of the answer to the OP's question. A tone shift for the cartoon series would consist of inching the plots and stories a little bit closer to 'real life', handling problems that are slightly more relatable than the carefully-crafted kid friendly universe.

Take some cues from Toy Story. There was a series that perfectly blended children's humour and adult humour and gave an emotional impact everybody could feel. The second film had a boner joke for Christ's sake, it just rocketed over childrens' heads.

So yeah, if you want to up the demographic target it's safe to include the most cunningly-disguised innuendo, because just the barest tilt of the head to the older audience will sustain them through the rest of the series. Don't do it if you want to remain a purely kids' show though, because that sort of dispells the magic of the children's show illusion.
