I like the mane cast, but they're all just caricatures designed to appeal to varying personality types - they have committees that do this and they do their best to make things seem organic. They want you to relate to and enjoy the characters that seem the most like you, and that's one reason why nobody can quite place their age. In the show, as fun as they are, the characters are vague and a little blank to hook you.
The fan made stuff, though, is where the characters are really fleshed out and matured. People take these personality templates and insert a little of themselves into them. We see characters that remind us of ourselves, of our own personal wants and desires, and we try to make them fail or succeed by our own standards.
Take Rainbow Dash, for example. A lot of people know she's a lesbian, and plenty of people like her character, so you see almost constant shipping. If she is a lesbian and no other ponies are, she seems lonely and unhappy. Personally, I think the whole debacle with Gilda must have been really frustrating for her, but the show will never reward my assumption.
The fans build the characters up and then tear them down. We give Derpy a child, then threaten to take the child away. The next day, we see a ton of happy Derpy threads because we feel bad about hurting the character.
The fan stuff is where it's at, in my opinion. The only thing I don't like are the people so focused on having sex with the characters that they contribute nothing intellectually or emotionally, and frankly they just look like hormonal teenagers to me. |
