Over the next few weeks. I got word from Powder Blue's doctor, who said his lifelong depression was easing up. It would take time for him to absorb the enormity of the change, but in time, he would recover.
My initial encounter with the ghost of old Seastorm Blue had given me enough data to conclude that the phenomenon was indeed real. My investigation into the haunted house had turned up the report of the accident, and I tracked him down.
Powder Blue's family moved soon after the accident; the memories were just too strong. His brothers had not been willing to talk to me, except Slate Blue. He regretted the incident deeply, and also blamed himself, although none of them could have known what would occur that night.
Powder had vowed that night to never let anything like that happen again; the next time he got a good night's sleep, he had gotten his butt symbol: a safety pin. (Colts don't call them cutie marks.)
They moved to another school district, where nobody knew of the accident. Yet somebody told, and he was nicknamed "Pokey," in that casually cruel way kids have of finding their peers' deepest weaknesses. They moved again, but the nickname did not follow him. |
