"Come now Fluttershy," Rarity said, inching towards her, "think of all the ways I could accessorize that lovely thing! I could show you whole new levels of color and taste!" She smiled coquettishly and blinked her long eyelashes. "If you'll just... let me see it, for a moment."
But Fluttershy saw something else in her unicorn friend's eyes: something fierce and hungry. Her hoof nudged the plain gold ring hanging by a thread around her neck. "I... think that's all right, Rarity," she said. "I like wearing it just the way I do now."
"But, Fluttershy, it's so PLAIN," Rarity said, "despite its... BEAUTIFUL golden hue, its... PRECIOUS simplicity... you must let me see it!"
"No," Fluttershy said, "I think you shouldn't." She turned sharply and began trotting away.
Rarity watched her go, the ache burning inside her like the fiercest fire. Her face was contorted with rage, and she suddenly broke into a gallop. Fluttershy barely noticed before the white unicorn slammed into her, knocking her to the ground. Rarity rolled her over and swung her hooves clumsily at the dangling Ring. "You think you have ANY claim to that magnificent thing?!" she screeched. "It only came to you by luck and chance! It COULD have been mine! It SHOULD be mine! GIVE IT TO ME!!"
"No!" the yellow pegasus cried. She slammed the Ring against her front hoof. It widened, the gold band growing until it slipped onto her foreleg. When it did so... Fluttershy vanished. |
