So I'm up late, unable to sleep, because I have an idea for a pony fanfic that I just can't get out of my head. It's not about any of the mane ponies, it's actually about an OC pony that I'm still fleshing out. The story was inspired by a few what-if theories from way back, about the pony world is actually the human world, far into the future, long after human have vanished, and that there are giant wastelands outside the fertile pony countries like Equestria. Basically, like what Big O had outside the domes.

My OC pony is a scavanger/relic hunter, his job is to venture out into the wastelands to find ruins, and try to scavenge or uncover lost technology to bring back and be studied by pony scientist, or sell to collectors. I know what I want to do with the story, it won't be anything grimdark or depressing, but written almost as if it were an entry in digger pony's journal, about a few of his treasure hunts, and the humorous names he comes up with for common human gadgets (example, when he figures out CD's play music, he calls them record mirrors). I've only got one snag that's holding me up. I can't think of a good name for the main character. Damn if pony names don't confound me. Something digging or adventure related, I imagine his cutie mark to be a shovel and pickaxe, so maybe something about that.

He was far too excited for what lay at the end of the road to pay any attention to his surroundings.
"Relax, Spike, it's not even noon, we've got all day to get wherever we're going," called Twilight Sparkle, trotting along at an even pace. Whatever spike wanted to show her, it wasn't worth passing up all the unique flora on the skirts of the Everfree forest. The purple pony took in each sight as it's own little learning experience, not wanting to miss spotting a rare flower or animal. Ever the scholar, she kept a tally in her head of what she saw.
Spike's feet brought him to a rise in the rugged path, which gave way to a view of a small clearing. The sun shone down amidst the forest canopy, illuminating the emerald grass to a beautiful shine. A small brook lazily babbled out of the treeline toward the far end of the clearing, briefly disappearing behind a lone house, or perhaps more appropriately, a small cabin, whose dull colored roof gently reflected the sun's rays.

In the first episode, at Pinkie Pie's party, you can see a grey pegasus with blond hair with derpy eyes. It was either a glitch or a prank by an animator who thought she'd be hidden, and 4chan went nuts over it. Later appearances from Feeling Pinkie Keen onwards are a deliberate nod to the fans.
