So every kind of pony has some innate magic, right? It's just that you need a horn or something similar to focus that magic into spells that alter the world around you. Otherwise the only magic you can use is innate stuff: weather control and flight for the pegasi, and plant and animal control for the earth ponies.

I'd say Earth ponies have a general talent, like if Ponyville went up in flames, Applejack could still work at any other farm. Earth ponies have a specific talent, but have a choice in its general application. Remember that artist pony, he might also work as an architect as his real job.

And for all their awesomeness, Unicorns and Pegasi seem to have greek style limitations. They get the benefit of magic, but I think they get cut out of the physical endurance/strength department, and have more limited choices of careers.

Plus, Appleoosa didn't have any unicorns or pegasi, so maybe you have to be close to the god princess to activate those genes.
