Derpy is whatever the fans want her to be, which is kind of awesome. Some people see her as a spazz, some as a normal pony with funny eyes, some see her as a hyper-enlightened uber-pony who is one with the cosmos. Sometimes she has a kid, sometimes she doesn't.

But what I like is that no matter what her portrayal, it is almost totally constant among all of them that she is great at her job as mailpony, and everyone in town loves and values her.

I was operating under the assumption that Equestria was just a part of the world where there are no wind currents or seasonal effects, hence why the ponies must make it rain or change the seasons manually. In one episode, I can't remember which, the ponies are surprised to hear that in other parts of the world, the weather operates on its own. The best comparison I have to this would be to compare it to the Calm Belts from One Piece. As for the sun rising and setting with Celestia and Luna respectively, my current theory is that the solar system in MLP is geocentric. In Equestria, where Celestia and Luna base themselves, they move the sun and moon into positions where they can revolve around the planet on their own. However, they still perform those tasks for the rest of the world.

I guess just the colour and simplicity of it, I play a lot of violent video games and almost every movie I go out to see with friends involves grimdark violence and shit. So I guess having something almost infectiously happy, bright and cheerful is an antidote, a pleasant antidote, I'm a quiet and gentle soul at heart and the violent stuff I watch and play is mostly an outlet for any hate. Problem is I've immersed myself in it so much I'm emitting more hate than gentle.

tl;dr Pony is a cure and counter to the violence and grimdark of other stuff in my life.
