Yep. Earth ponies have a connection with the Earth, so they are the ones that grow food. Fluttershy is an exception that proves the rule, as she is the only one we see living on the ground.

Pinkie Pie was made an Earth pony because she would be flying around like Dash if she could, which would take away from Dash's character. Plus, she's a cook, so he has an "innate" understanding of what ingredients to mix.

Pinkie really does remind me of a pegasus in a metaphor sense. Wings = free spirit. Pinkie is the freeist of free spirits, so wings work for her. But I've come to enjoy that she's different. It makes her that much more of an eccentric to be a wild and crazy Earth pony.

In addition, as another anon pointed out to me, Fluttershy and Dash make a nice contrast, just as Pinkie and AJ. If Dash and Pinkie had both been pegasi, they'd be zooming this way and that, while the Earth ponies would be trotting along all slow like.

Meh, I can't find it anymore. No biggie, it basically just explained "divine" ponies, pegasuses (pegasii?), unicorns and earth ponies.

I don't know about anyone else, but I can't just accept Magic (I ain't gotta explain shit) as the reason for things working like they do. So I usually try to explain things using SCIENCE (You wouldn't understand).

Basically, the story takes place on a more terraformed Mars, specifically in a biodome. The ponies have done their best to expand the size of their dome, but the still thin Mars atmosphere makes that difficult for large groups to leave. Plus, the fact that it is an "enclosed space" means that they have to manually move things to keep the engineered plants and animals in tune with the "season." Even the sun and moon can be explained as the closing of the sunroof and artificial illumination for the moon. All the other sapient animals also have their own domes, but probably later designs that are more automatic.

For everything else, I just blame Hideo Kojima.

I like how we devise all these intricate relationships based on which ponies stand next to each other in thw background.

I want to put this theory forth again.

Aside the Princesses, only Earth ponies appear in the first ep's prologue. So maybe unicorns and pegasi are descended from children Celestia had with Earth pony mates, after the banishing of her sister made her lonely. As half-breeds, they have only half of her divine attributes - the horn, or the wings, with their associated magical powers. This explains why pegasi can control weather: in addition to the wings, they have some of her innate sky magic. It also explains a few other small details, such as where RD gets her rainbow hair genome from, and why Earth Ponies have surprisingly good social standing: they're purebred, original, "natural" ponies.

We have seen two. Humorous aberrations. How many Earth Pony royal guards have we seen? The normal earth ponies all seem to have jobs that nobody else would want, or bothers to compete for, because the other two races can simply do almost every job possibility better than they can.

Pegasus are infinitely better at any kind of courier or transport job. The only moving job, something you would think earth ponies would be rather good at, we have seen was staffed entirely by pegasus. Likewise, anything that requires dexterity is better suited to a unicorn and its telekenesis, rather than the slobbery grip of an earth pony.

I've always thought that Dash probably dyes her hair. I imagine she started after her first Sonic Rainboom, which is also when she got her Cutie Mark, the two being directly related. (Since she's the only pegasus to perform this feat, her Cutie Mark would be directly related to her "special talent," like Rarity's gemfinding spell) Thus the Rainboom kind of became her whole identity and she decided to change her appearance to match.

I'm imagining an episode where everyone wonders how RD got such beautiful rainbow hair, and she has to play modest for fear of seeming vain and losing her friends. In the end she breaks down and admits that she dyes her hair, but her friends (Rarity in particular) rally and tell her that it's okay to put in effort to look good, and that as long as your appearance matches who you are on the inside, it's all good.

I think it's just because of physical limitations. Earth ponies have the strength and stamina to get good at many things. Meanwhile, Pegasi's hollow bones limit them to weather control and non-physically intensive labors, while Unicorns have very limited TK and a special talent (Twilight is the exception, but I'm of the opinion she was engineered that way).

One thing I've noticed from what little I've seen of G1-G3 is how flat the animation was - their eyes look painted on, and everything moves so stiffly. I've no idea how much of the heavy work is done by Flash or by the animators' skill, but little things like Rarity's mane curls bouncing as she walks, to the droopy-ears in an AW FUCK moment, to Pinkie's ... Just recently did I get into ponies, and I remember a while back that my friend who'd gotten me into them wanted me to read this. I never really got around to it until today. And it really kind of hit home for me.

When I was growing up, my mother was handicapped. Not to the point of Derpy, mind you. But to the point that she had the mentality of a 13 year old. I loved the hell out of her, and never felt the looks she was given when we went out because of her cerebral palsy.

I remember how disappointed, but encouraging she would be to me if I got any bad grades. I kind of feel like she had the same additude. That she wanted me to grow up smart and educated. To not take it for granted.

It's been nine years since she died of Cancer. And this made me think of her and cry.

I only think of it that way because she's the only pony shown to have more than two colors in her hair. The rainbow mane is pretty drastically different from any other natural color we've seen on a pony.

She's not focused on her appearance like Rarity, but more on "cool factor" which I would see as her motivation for doing it. Kind of like those punk girls that dye their hair all kinds of crazy colors just to be different. Which is why she would be afraid of being found out, for fear of being thought "girly."
