The CG in that movie was masterful for its time and had more lifelike realism in the dinos then any prequel of Starwars combined. I still consider it a classic for my generation. Scifi films can be classics. The movie has a great musical score, and memorable moments, and scenes that are always referenced in pop culture.

By definition, any movie that have nostalgic ties to the general audience is classic. You can pretty much call Matrix a classic because of this.

As a film geek, I only use the term "classic" to refer to films made in the 'golden age' of the Hollywood studio system, and I never use the term to describe a movie which has stood the test of time, because it doesn't really make sense to me and seems kind of arbitrary. I like a lot of old movies precisely because they got weird with age. Hallelujah I'm a Bum! and Sylvia Scarlet might have seemed banal in their day, but today they're just all kinds of strange and I love it.
