Very newbish, off topic question. Just finished watching all of MLP, but was disappointed when I never saw Derpy attempting to put mail into a mailbox, as I'd seen some .GIF files, as well as some youtube things set to music. Mostly because it's a show about ridiculously bright and cheery things wrapped in a package of great writing and animation. It's more or less tricked us into accepting traditionally "girly" things, and that's a breath of fresh air for a lot of people. I've actually found myself becoming desensitized to things that guys should never watch a show about (fashion, rainbows, ponies, etc), and for that reason I think it's really brilliant.

What I mean by that is that they aren't dumbed down. They have interesting personalities, qualities, flaws, and desires that make them a lot of fun to watch. Also strangely attractive.

They're also well drawn and animated. They're definitely some of the most dynamic and visually appealing female characters I've ever seen.

In summary, I am in love with every pony.

It's not like it's going to be mind blowing analysis. It's different for every individual.

For me, personally, it's great to have a legitimately funny show that's neither coated heavily in sarcasm (Adventure Time) or cynicism (Regular Show). It seems like every great cartoon or even comedy before this was one or the other. The ponies. . . they're funny without being either of those. They're actually kind of sweet.

But this is even just one part of many reasons. The characters, for me, are so rich, they just about leap off the screen with the brilliant twisting of archetypes, great voice acting, and superb animation.

And the ponies are cute. I think they hit the same spot for me as kittens do.

The flaw is that I got invested in retard Derpy. It's what happens when I write, and usually helps with my short stories. Obviously though, getting into the version of the character I dislike enough to write a somewhat realistic backstory to is the antithesis of what I should have done. I like the CMC. Their episodes were fun. I think I side a little more to Stare Master than Show Stoppers, though I got a much better feel for the characters in SS. So I might as well throw my opinion on them out here.

Because if there is one thing the internet needs more of, it's opinions.

Applebloom is a weird one for me. I like her best when she's with the main cast, actually. Maybe because Bridle Gossip was so great, or when she gave Twilight those eyes. AB with the CMC seems to become slightly less interesting, and she actually fades as a fun character for me in these situations. Albeit, clumsy Kung Fu AB was pretty gun.

Scootaloo, she's great. I like her attitude for many of the same reasons I like Dash. I find the mini-pony's love of 80s rock to be rather adorable, and her wing powered scooter was pretty sweet.

Sweetie Belle, I can't honestly tell you for certain why I like her. I think it's because she seems just a touch more laid back than AB or Scoots. She seems to play the voice of reason among them, and perhaps is the de facto leader. Maybe her voice also really helps.

I never did like fic because of their inherent propensity to become fapfests, bawwwstories, or author self-insertion. However, here's a few neutral ideas.

1.) Spike sprouts a pair of wings and wreaks all kinds of havoc. General funny episode, can't think of a lesson yet.

2.) Someone destroys something important (like a town square statue or something) and everyone points the finger at Rainbow Dash. When some sort of evidence pops up which seems to show that she's guilty, even some of her own friends start to doubt her honesty. The lesson revolves around trust and believing your friends when everyone else turns on them.

3.)We meet Rarity's parents, who don't share their daughter's fashion standards. Haven't found the exact lesson here, but you probably see where it's pointing.

4.) Vinyl Scratch's starts a popular dance club, but it's sick beats are keeping the town up at night. Twilight has to come up with a way to keep the town from overreacting without having Scratch's club closed down. Still thinking of a lesson.

All of these ideas were invented on the fly. Take em or leave em.

Probably for the best. If I can make a recommendation, why not avoid Ponyville altogether? It seems to be a dead end sink for most quests and RP's. Quests let us explore new places, so how about we start off somewhere far away, or even in another species lands? You might also want to take a bit more control of the quest. Offer two or three choices at the end, but just give us the "Other" option. It might make it easier to deal with.

Think of it like those old choose your own adventure books. Remember ow you would read a chunk, then it would give you options on what to do, and the story would evolve like that. It's similar, except you can also just make something up. I would then write the next section according to that. We also do occasional rolls if what you are going to do is difficult, I give warning for that and tell you what you need to roll. If the last digit of the user's post is equal or higher, the action passes.
