I'm writing a fic but I found myself in need of creating two characters to drive it forward. I wasn't sure if I should keep them, and I was working to drop one, but it would have needed some major logical shifts to the story flow.

The one I nearly dropped is actually turning into a better character than I expected, and is appealing to a side of Rainbow Dash that she has always wanted to embrace. The other character is tugging on Fluttershy's heartstrings, offering her an opportunity of a lifetime, which she'll have to come to terms with.

I have a question for fic readers: What do you consider acceptable when it comes to OCs in fan fiction? If you hate them outright, what about it bothers you?

Personally, I give every character, original or not, the same amount of love; the way I see it, they all have a role to play in the story, so all of them need to be written well. I believe the key is not to cater to a particular taste you might expect your reader to have, but to recreate the world and the characters in such a way that it all fits together and makes sense for the length of your story.

You know, what kind of bothers me is that I have an OC I use for various settings and she's very similar to Pinkie Pie in personality. I couldn't ever use this OC in an MLPFIM setting because people would accuse me of ripping off Pinkie Pie.

I know Pinkie Pie wouldn't judge her, though. They would just have tons of fun and parties and eat the Cakes out of house and home.

The reason I don't pair Trixie with any other character is because I like to believe she is a strong, independent character. That doesn't mean she can't have her own trauma and neuroses, but if she does have them they aren't going to be solved through romance.

There seems to me to be this big trend in people's thinking that romantic relationships can fix your personal problems. In my experience, they rarely do, and are in fact the cause of many personal issues.
