okay episode. I'd put it on par with Diamond Dogs, Ticketmaster, one of those episodes. We all know how good a character-centric episode can be, and this wasn't quiiite up there.

It felt like the idea was great, and the plot development was very good, but the episode was a bit uneven nonetheless, with some scenes too long and some too short. Honestly it won't surprise me if the second half of the series is suffering more from them having to rush episodes to meet transmission deadlines.

First up, Rarity's hat. I found it awful, might just be me. The dress Fluttershy was modelling in the boutique was okay, but the hat/headdress didn't quite work, and those ribbons in that color, why. The jumpsuit was okay as well, would have worked much better on another pony.

The thing about fashion and design is that you've got to have the type of model the outfit flatters instead of having everything you design go onto one model. The jumpsuit for the photoshoot was a pretty poor choice to make.

What I'm wondering is why Rarity keeps on meeting new high-class ponies to clop over. In every Rarity-centric episode it's treated like she's never been noticed by anyone famous before. After Suited for Success, she should really be a headline name in Equestrian fashion. This would make it kind of obvious that the most recent episode should come before Suited for Success, but in A Dog and Pony Show, Sapphire Shores seems to imply that Rarity is an up-and-coming designer that is at least partially known, which doesn't really fit with coming after either this or SfS.

And in every episode she gets "noticed" like everyone has no idea who she is. It's even stated outright by BonBon in this episode.

It's like, come on guys, is she famous or not?

If I had to put them in order it would be Green Isn't Your Color, then Dog and Pony Show, then Suited For Success. Still seems like they're playing kind of fast and loose with the timeline. Not to mention the whole Spike thing. We already know he has a crush on her, it's been fleshed out over multiple episodes, and was written 100 times better in Dog and Pony Show. Then in this episode we get, "Guess what guys I liek Rarity TEEHEE." It was the worst part of this episode in my opinion, it led up to absolutely nothing, was ham-fisted, and dumb compared to how we've seen them before.

I'd say this should have been one of the first episodes shown, with how they handled the character writing.

I thought that scene fell horribly flat. We've known that he likes Rarity since the first episode. The joke itself was alright I guess, could have had more of a sarcastic/silly reaction from Pinkie to make it go over better, but really what was the point of all that crap? They had virtually no interaction with each other like in Dog and Pony Show, it was all just "TEEHEE SPIKE LIKES RARITY" that didn't go anywhere. Even at the end when Twilight accidentally spills his secret, it's not made clear if anyone actually heard, and it seems like it had absolutely no effect on anything. It's even stated by Twilight that everyone already knows.

Yeah, I can see that, but if they were going for that as a B-plot I think it fell victim to bad writing, because as I said, it went absolutely nowhere and showed the viewer nothing that they didn't already know.

Still think this episode should have been Episode 2 or 3, would have been much more fitting there in my opinion. Maybe it's just because we've had 2 fantastic Rarity character development episodes, and more than enough Fluttershy, but this one just felt so "flat" to me. No substance at all, and all of the plot points have already been (mostly) resolved or done better in prior episodes.

Sure, it's a little funny...

But not when you view it in contrast to episodes like Dog and Pony Show where they have actual interaction that shows the same thing, but in a much more subtle and nuanced light. The fact that this episode directly followed that makes it all the more jarring.

Bon-Bon has a split personality due to a history of child abuse at the hooves of her parents in Canterlot.

Lyra, her best and only friend, took her away from their to live in the more laid back town of Ponyville.

Lyra does her best to care for her... adult Bon-Bon surfaces the most and is quite a well-adjusted, normal pony who Lyra prefers the most.

childish Bon-Bon surfaces occasionally as well... often when she gets excited. Lyra enjoys her company too, as it allows her to remember some of the good old days she had growing up with her pink and blue maned friend. But sometimes her childishness grates on Lyra's nerves and she snaps at Bon-Bon like a weary parent.

But there's also 'another' personality... one which has seldom been seen by anypony outside of bon-Bon's family, her doctors, and Lyra. It isnt clear where the anger comes from... but there's one thing you can be sure of.

I can't believe there are so many people that didn't like this episode. I thought it was great. The pinkie stuff was A grade and i was starting to feel like pinkie was getting left behind. I expected rarity to be a rampaging bitch that learns her lesson in the end as is so common with these kinds of plots. I was happy to be proven wrong. Rarity maintained composure when everyone around her was slighting her left and right. The spike/rarity stuff always gets a bit of a groan from me but they at least managed to turn that groan into a chuckle. All in all one of the better episodes in a long time. Not my favorite but definitely high on my list.
