Pigs, I think, are literally the dumbest animals in Equestria. There's no intelligence or personality in them(at least compared to critters like Angel), and even living in a Sugar Bowl hasn't gifted them with any reasonable amounts of cute.

I find Gilda fans kind of weird but at the end of the day I'd like t see Gilda come back, mainly because for what she is. We've ALL had a friend like Gilda, somebody who only has one friend and is completely devoted to them. They always seem to have an 'us two vs. the world' view of everybody else. They get extremely jealous when you're with your other friends and act like complete jerks when your with some other friends. The sort of person Gilda is deep down is needy and clingy, they're over-protective because they really see you as their greatest friend ever but can be horrible to others.

I dunno, I kindof feel that My Little Pony is integral to the utilization of the series. All the horse puns and way the world works with pegasus and unicorns. If you removed all references to ponies, say, by making everyone human, I think a lot of the world would have to be reworked to fit, because there's a lot about how the world works that we're willing to put up with precisely because they're magical ponies. How the weather works, for instance. It would actually seem even more saccharine because I think I would have a mental block, in that reality just doesn't work that way.
Given the material we have, you'd either have to remove a lot of that saccharine and make it more realistic, losing much of the charm, or you'd have to focus more on the magical girl style elements, wherein the world is clearly magical and we have to protect it from the forces of darkness or icky non-utopian reality may set in, like what happened to the Everfree.
