Actually, on a more serious note, the whole "D&D escape from reality/suicide story" in Mazes and Monsters is a pretty good example of what you're implying. Where they basically blamed the game for his "retreat from reality" and eventually suicide, when it turns out the real story was basically that the kid was on drugs, probably gay, had absolutely no real friends, and his parents gave him a ton of shit, so it messed him up emotionally and psychologically.

But it's a lot easier for parents to believe that there's some external evil that drove their son crazy than having to admit he had problems and it was probably their fault he's dead, so the bullshit story is much preferable to the actual truth.

In his case, getting into D&D was probably the only happy part of his entire life. Had he stuck with the fantasy, he might actually have made more friends, and still be alive today.

"Wha-" the man stuttered.

The scene at the park was a grim one, a man was found with a pocket knife stabbing wildly at dogs all around him. He was babbling like a mad man claiming the griffon had changed shapes. He was shot.
