There isn't a big problem with too much exposition. There are parts that you can cut, but it's mostly the typical extraneous stuff that new writers put in. Adverbs in quote attributions, for instance.

If anything, there were parts that didn't have enough description. I didn't understand what that big ball over the lake was supposed to be about, for instance.

Someone should write a fanfic that tries to incorporate all the shipping of pretty much all the fanfics.

Like a Soap opera esque-multi-ship-athon that incorperates diagrams to keep people up to date on the shippings.

i'll bite, hope you don't mind harsh criticism. the prologue is hideously unnecessary, and actually doesn't even add anything to the story at all. i'd go so far as to say it seems like it's from a different story. if you must fill the reader in on details like this, try and work it into the story naturally or in dialogue. this will probably take some getting use to.

the characters and setting seem interesting but, ironically, need expansion. what exactly is going on here? why are they REALLY here? is this story complete? what is that serpent thing? these are all questions your reader is likely to ask, and you need to have either a good excuse to brush them off, or just answer them.

all that being said, it's not dreadfully written, and certainly not the worst thing i've ever seen. keep practicing, i want to see what will happen in this story!

This is only the first chapter- I'm ending it off with a lot of loose threads to attempt to hook the reader in for chapter two when ALL IS REVEALED or at least elaborated upon. Trust me, I don't add in unnecessary details. Or, at least, I try not to.

As for the prologue, yeah, I'm not entirely happy with it- but I thought it was necessary for explaining why the ponies are suddenly wandering around underground and why there's a pegasus that's never flown in the open before. I could really think how I could lay all that out in dialogue without it being terribly conspicuous. But yeah, that's probably inexperience talking.

There's plenty of ways to establish this, especially considering that the only part of the prologue that really matters is the middle-zone thing. Simply having one of the characters mention off-hand something about the "middle zone" implants a sense of mystery in the reader, or, if you want, have them explain it to the other character as if they were stupid/forgetful.

So, my friend was telling me about a dream he had last night today

The short version is that he was an Earth pony sans cutie mark, and a group of Tophat wearing ponies came from a different country and introduced Racism to Equestria...kinda.

In these Tophat wearing ponies's opinion, Unicorns were the best, Pegasus are okay, and Earth Ponies are dirt.

This dream proceeded to have Twilight locked away in her library by some magic user, Rarity convinced to become the Quisling, Applejack in hiding, Pinkie and Fluttershy deprogrammed and brainwashed, and Dash getting her Wings Clipped, but still fighting against these tophat wearing ponies. Apparently my friend was whipped.

Of course, the only possible reaction to something like that is to build on it. Between us, we fleshed out a basic storyline, and started plotting it.

We had some random stuff like Doctor Hooves saving as many ponies as possible with his TARDIS (we decided it was the satchel he was wearing when Applebloom tried to sell him Apples), Celestia being imprisoned in the Sun, Luna still without her powers being unable to help anyone, and the existence of a third sibling, called Gaea. Oh, and Spike got eaten (maybe)
