The only time he's contributed to an episode outside of comedy or being scared of something was when he confronted Snips and Snails about them blindly taking Trixie's claims as the truth. But really he was doing exactly what Twilight would do in that situation. The reason Twilight wasn't doing it herself was she was avoiding the situation about using magic and taking on Trixie.

The only person that wrote Spike as slapstick was Lauren Faust who is a raging feminist as we know and wanted to see the only male character get the shit kicked out of him.

Spike's specialty is actually an unique sense of humor, opposite to that of Pinkie Pie. While Pinkie Pie relies on "LOLRANDOM" humor (note: this is usually a terrible way to do humor, but Pinkie pulls it off), Spike relies on a dry, more grounded sense of humor.

I believe this gives him an uniqueness that none of the other characters have, and if written well enough, would allow him to carry his own episode. Obviously main cast where needed, but Spike as the center.
