The short answer is, it's just incredibly popular. The reason it has constant generals that fill up quickly isn't because some people want to talk about it a lot, although they do, it's because a lot of people want to talk about it. A very lot.

Something about this show just clicks in a way that makes it fun to talk about, I don't entirely understand it myself. It's probably that the writers are putting effort into continuity and world building combined with just how damnedably cute the characters are. Those two things haven't been together since PPG I think, and that was at its peak before /co/ existed.

My personal cannon is that all ponies are magical.
Unicorns have the easiest time in utilizing their innate magic, as their horn acts as a natural focus, letting them shape the expression of their magic.
Pegasi tend to be more limited in how they use their power(flight, cloudwalking, weather manipulation), but it's ultimately no less potent in action.
Earth ponies, lacking the biology to properly focus their magic have the toughest time controlling what it's used for, but with time, practice and sheer force of will can develop some impressive abilities, such as animating their tail hair to act as an extra limb, or simply living their everyday lives with flagrant disregard for the commonly accepted laws of physics.

Wow my little post got a few good replies about Pinkie! Well like I said I find Pinkie Pie funny first and formost (the cat lady joke had me nearly fall out of my chair!) but so far her characterization beyond 'wacky chaos pony of fun party timez!' Which while entertaining to watch is all there is to her, I totally get why people say Pinkie is their favourite but personally I hope Pinkie Pie gets a REAL episode soon where we can see her... as a character and not as a walking prop for wacky jokes. Feeling Pinkie Keen was sort of in the right direction even the though the writing was messy.

Pinkie already has basically no social qualms and is just about as talkative as can be. Pinkie Pie is also already disoriented enough to fall over when leaning slightly forward, hops in leu of walking, and has a short attention span. With her metabolism she would probably very quickly lose any buzz she gets.

To gush a little over Pinkie, but she quickly became my favorite character. I guess it's because I've lived a good portion of my life being someone hard to understand, full of strange quirks that make sense to me, but get me all sorts of weird stares from family or friends. I've been known to say weird things, and with a lot of my friends, I'm the energetic, talkative one. And one of the most common praises I get from friends is that I'm funny.

Now, Pinkie and I are not 1-to-1 by any stretch. She's about 30 times the extravert I am, among other things. But her eccentric personality, her love of laughter and pranking, and having an intelligence hidden by quirks are all things I relate to a lot. So to me, she isn't the just party-girl-chaos-avatar, but more.

Or maybe I'm simply a party-girl-chaos-avatar-of-destruction and don't know it?

I totally agree with you on FPK, it was more a Twilight observing Pinkie Pie than Pinkie Pie really having to do with anything which was disappointing because in the end I don't think either of them left the episode looking all that great. I watch MLP with my 4 and 5 year old niece and nephew (sometimes nephew he likes the show but doesn't like admitting it, I'm taking a year off college so taking care of them isn't a big deal) and they both thought the episode was funny but... weird.

Simple problems to solve.
1- Just use a background character as an OC stand-in. Make some references to show events and leave off the descriptions and BOOM - an "OC" that people can stand.
2- If it looks too dark, just add some silver lining. Get's the theme across without being unnecessarily heavy. Besides, making the situation not so black-and-white (in this case, all black) makes it more realistic.

I call this one DOOM: Repercussions of Magic

Twilight Sparkle waited. The lanterns above her blinked and sparked out of the air. There were parasprites in Ponyville. She didn’t see them, but had expected them now for years. Her warnings to Prinses Celestia were not listened to and now it was too late. Far too late for now, anyway.
Twilight was a unicorn for 18 years. When she was young she watched the magics and she said to dad “I want to be on the magics daddy.”
Dad said “No! You will be KILL BY PARASPRITES”
There was a time when she believed him. Then as she got older she stopped. But now in the central plaza of the ponyville she knew there were parasprites.
“This is Celestia” read a letter that crackered out of the air. “You must fight the parasprites!”
So Twilight gotted her uncorn horn and blew up the fountain.
“SHES GOING TO KILL US” said the parasprites
“I will zap at her” said the Nightmare moon and she fired the magic missles. Twilight magaeced at her and tried to blew her up. But then the treehouse collapsed and they were trapped and not able to kill.
“No! I must kill the parasprites!” she shouted
A paper appeared that said “No, Twilight. You are the parasprites”
And then Twilight was a cockatrice.
