Maybe it's just that particular area? I personally have a wide variety of friends here that I share a lot of different interests with. Some are sports fans, some like comics and cartoons, some have the same taste in music, and some are just messed up in the head in all the right ways, like the guy I draw comics with. I did some online survey once and it said that I had an Indiana accent that was the gold standard for TV weathermen, with some inflections of the good old northern great plains from my time in Minnesota. I've been deliberately trying to accentual the Minnesota part of my voice since I moved out to Connecticut as a way to separate myself from the nightmarish locals.

I do have a bit of a thing for ladies with a strong southern accent. Not so much the rural white trash voice, but 'I'm wearing huge skirts and waiting for my man to get back from fighting the northern aggression'.
