People kept talking about the grand Galloping Gala being the most possible end of the first season.

So the Gala is a colossal sucess and we get to see how Twilight and company are having the best day ever.

- Pinkie Pie manages to play, enjoy and beat all games available, all at the same time. Don't ask how, she's Pinkie Pie.

- Applejack gets to sell her apples and apple tools. She makes 1/3 more of the money she expected to, AND gets preorders for more apples and apple products. New roof, plow and hip, here we go...

- Fluttershy visits the royal gardens and is overwelmed with it's beauty. Yes, there ARE humming and buzzing birds after all, and they were the most poilte and educated birds ever.

- Rainbow Dash is allowed to make a small performance to open the WonderBolt's show. After the show ends, she is announced as the new reserve member of the WonderBolts, RainbowDash is stuck saying "ohmygoshohmygoshohmygosh" until somebody slaps her in the back of her head.

- Rarity discovers Celestia never had a nephew, but the fame she earned through Hoity Toty scores her a small (but awesome) number of suitors. For the first time ever, she stops and considerates people for what they are instead of for what she wishes them to be.

- Twilight enjoyes probably what's her first whole day of fun, but also get to know other interesting people, like a Zebra diplomat from Zecora's homeland. Many questions are answered, part of Zecora's past is explained.

-To his surprise, Spike meets a female dragon, who's the secretary of the Zebra diplomat.Both kids discretely leave to exchange tales, brag about their deeds and badmouth their bosses. They laugh a lot.

Celestia's light remains are surrounded by black flames and then consumed on a huge pillar of darkness that leaves Equestria and flies into the setting sun. For a moment, everyone can see the faint image of Celestia being engraved into the sun before it dissapears behind the mountains and the night fall all over Equestria. A sinester, yet familiar laugh resonates everywhere...

The clouds swirl and dash towards Celestia's throne, and slowly turn into Night Mare Moon, who is still laughing like a madmare. Twilight quickly regains her cool and urges her friends to invoke the Elements of Harmony, but NightMare Moon stops them by seizing Spike (the Zebra and the female dragon were just NMM's constructs) and forcing their power into Spike's body, consuming him into a black flame from where he emerges transformed into a huge, horrible and berserker monster that starts attacking the Gala's participants.
Before Twilight could react, she and her friends are trapped into dark crystal orbs that suppress the power of their elements and take off, sending every girl to a different part of the planet. Everything is lost. Celestia has been trapped into the sun, the Elements of Harmony have been neutralized and dispersed, darkness is absolute, Night Mare Moon has won, Spike is now his faithful, mindless servant and the night will last forever.

Twilight awakens in a dark prison made of obsidian. Nobody else is there, and she quickly realizes she was abandoned in there to die of thirst or starvation. Before she falls in desperation, she hears the faint sound of somebody crying: then she notices that someone else is locked in there with her.
Her eyes open with surprise and then with horror when she recognizes the badly beaten up body of the hurt, and barely alive... Princess Luna.
Screen fades to black, a faint message of "To be continued on season 2" appears while NMM's laughter resonates, and then the screen fades back to black.

The season will end with a two-parter involving the Element of Harmony gems being stolen. Since such powerful magic in the wrong hooves could ruin Equestria, the girls set off to find them. Eventually it is discovered that Trixie is using the gems to enhance her magic, but in doing so, she's disturbing the balance of nature without realizing it.

The resulting catastrophe causes Celestia to be unable to control the sun, and the sun swells to three times its normal size, leading to a horrible drought that could destroy Equestria. Twilight and friends, as the rightful bearers of the Elements, are able to take them from Trixie, but it's too late. The only way to stop the catastrophe is for Celestia to use all her power to return the sun to normal. In doing so, she is reduced to a baby pony and placed in a deep sleep.

Luna tells Twilight that the magic of friendship is the only thing that can restore Celestia. Until then, Luna will rule on her own. This sets up season two, where instead of sending letters to the princess, Twilight will send them to Luna, and each lesson will magically cause the sleeping Celestia to grow a little bit.
