Hm. A good OC... I've never written one into a story, but let me put this out there.

If you can put your OC in a crowd with the background ponies and they blend in nicely, you've designed it well. If they're not above the abilities of any of the mane cast, you've characterized them well.

I'm gonna say the things that separates good OCs from bad ones can vary with the show, but all the bad ones tend to have a few things in common.
Bad OCs tend to be insisted upon by their creators. They could be the best character around but if they are shoved into an area where they hog the spotlight for way too long then they get irritating. I think this (for me ) may be the most deciding factor in an OC. They just don't know when to step down into the background.

My money is on Rainy day. As much as I like Mocha's design, Rainy day's is something thats completely unique and integrates very well into the character.

Concepts and designs that are both unique and interesting are what separate good OCs and bad ones. The turning test is always in the first image or idea of it being presented... if people aren't interested in it then, no amount of refinement will save it. (sans people who seem to hate everything)

HOLY DERP THIS IS EPIC

Speaking about OCs, I would appreciate some comments about some OCs I was creating for some fics.
The first one is a quiet, and completely white Unicorn called "Wildcard", who travels around Equestria meeting different people and taking notes for a book he's writting about friendship and socializing. His special ability allows him to copy other ponie's talents (His cutie mark is replaced by the other pony's mark while his skill is in effect, and his white coat and mane copy the other pony's color and shape as well.)
Wildcard uses this ability to put himself on the other pony's shoes and study the different angles of friendship and behavior with more ease, however his special ability must meet a series of conditions before he could activate it, such as:
- The copied pony must agree to let his/her special talent copied, Wildcard cannot impose his ability upon others.
- Only one ability can be copied at a time, if he copies other ability the first one is replaced by the new one.
- While the copied ability is in effect, Wildcard's personality is affected and resembles the other pony's personality, he can't avoid this. (This is mostly to be used for laughs)
- Depending of how complex is the ability to be copied, it can last for hours or just for a couple seconds. (If he copies, let´s say, Big Macintosh's talent, Wildcard will get superstrength and farming knowdeledge for hours, but if he tries to copy Twilight's talent he will be lucky if he can keep the copied abilities for a couple minutes before running out of magic.

The moral of the stoty if how this guy is so obsessed with understanding other people's feelings that he was forgetting about his own identity and his own being, until Twilight and friends put him back on the right track- which is the last chapter on the book he was tryng to write in the first place.
