Considering Derpy has consistent background appearances in nearly every episode and isn't cloned like some other background ponies are (Bon-Bon, Doctor Whooves) it may be assumed she's someone's pet character. Or just the Faust/McCracken tradition of having recurring background characters.

In which case, she probably has a canon name, it just hasn't been revealed.

Of course, that does mean they may change it...

We've seen that in Equestria, Ponies pretty much run everything, up to and including helping animals perform basic functions such as waking up from hibernation and building nests for the birds. It may be that the Ponies believe (whether it is true or not) that if they didn't take care of the pigs themselves, they would simply go extinct.

Also we've seen at least one other sentient "non-fantasy" race, the cows from Applebuck Season. However, cows have no real sway in the world as far as we've seen, and seem to be rather dull-witted. It may very well be that pigs are the same, sentient but subservient to the Ponies under a sort of "caste system," with Ponies at the top taking care of pretty much everything while the lesser races wallow in the mud and such.

There are different types of kid's shows. Those that are focused on characters the same age as the demographic, which tend to be overly sugar-coated, dumbed down, and preachy (CMC episodes) and those that are focused on "older kids" whom are viewed by the demographic as being "cool" and role models (Non-CMC episodes.) The latter tends to be more interesting and has potential for more sophisticated jokes that can appeal to older audiences as well.

It's the glasses man, they have the "old people" vibe to them. That's definitely not a style someone in their early 20s wear since they're not really "cool" but made for function (obviously since she only wears them at work).

Sai is way better for lineart, it's much more responsive to tablets. I'd say photoshp is better for colors.
