Spike's various responsibilities in no particular order:

1) Character for males to relate to.

2) Little brother character.

3) Confidant for Twilight who can be brutally honest.

4) Comic relief (thankfully more of the sarcastic witty kind than the butt of physical comedy, though he does that sometimes too).

5) Exposition guy. Asks questions like "what is winter wrap-up?" so it can be explained to him and the audience. When he's not around Twilight usually fills this role.

So Spike's type of dragon are an equial society living in friendly trading relationships with the ponies.

Somewhere along the line of contact the ponies found out that the dwarven dragons sometimes have members who have a natural connection to magic. So the ponies hired them as helpers and massengers until it became normal that all magic students get such a dragon as assistant.

Which is how Twighlight got Spike.

Yeah, Spike's role is a little strange to begin with.
Especially since he Twilight seem to be good friends from the start. The whole "learn about friendship" thing becomes a little strange as Twi and Spike probably have the deepest companionship of all the main characters.

Basically the addition of Twilight seem to be what brought the rest of the group together. Before that it would seem as if most of the other ponies only got together for bigger social events.

I wonder... if Gilda is the justification for how Rainbow Dash ended up the way she is - somewhat self-centered and has difficulty showing empathy for others - I thought, why not Fluttershy too? What if this rumored "Flight School" is analogous to the often harsh environment of our high schools, with bullies all about. Rainbow Dash dealt with it by making herself tough, whereas Fluttershy did the opposite and avoids all conflict.

It varies from person to person, but the main points I keep seeing are these:

We like the animation and art styles

We feel that the stories are well-written, and not the usual offal that's found in other girl's cartoons

We like the characters and their portrayals, and how well they are kept in-character throughout the episodes

We like how open-ended and undefined many aspects of the world are, and how that lends great leeway for making fanfiction and fanart

We like that the animators, artists, and creators of the show not only are aware of us, but actively and routinely interact with us on our own threads

We like the way that all of the characters are nice to one another, and while arguments happen and grudges get formed, they usually end quickly and with a laugh. The overarching theme of forgiveness and kindness is very refreshing to people who had become jaded by their own will, like much of 4chan

Finally, we like the sheer level of d'awww present in the show (though in my opinion some take that a bit too far, but that's hardly any of my business and 34 is just a fact of the internet)

Of course, that's just my interpretation. If you've got time, I suggest you settle in and watch a few episodes to see if you like it. If you don't that's fine, it's not for everyone and I understand that. If you do like it, well, that's fine too. Either way, you're welcome here anytime.

Hello /toy/. Just saying that I finally took the plunge and bought my first Ponies after watching all the episodes so far. Of course, I bought the very tiniest 1½" figures. They are exactly like in the show, no messy hair to brush, and they are way less conspicuous than taller figures.
I got Rarity, Twilight Sparkle, Applejack, Rainbow Dash and Pinkie Pie... BUT WHERE'S FLUTTERSHY? Why my local Zellers did not have it? Why Ebay don't have it? I hope my "local" TrU have it. They better because that store is pretty far from my home.
