I just rewatched Call of the Cutie, and I gotta say the CMC are growing on me.

A little history: the twins (29, F) and I (32, M) had a favorite babysitter when we were growing up. She had lots of board games and Garfield comic compilations, and her sister had every Pony released in America. (This was 1985ish.) Nobody was allowed to touch the Ponies. Well, you are right, the best thing on Stare Master was the little inside jokes, only someone who have to deal with kids know how what that episode shows is exactly how it goes, hell, even the "quiet game" is done, everyone tried that one once. Another funny thing was how they tried to make rhymes with CMC and her big sisters, at the begin of the episode Rarity shows her new golden tissue to Fluttershy saying "I just think it adds a little touch don't you think?" minutes later Sweetie show to her friends the new CMC cape saying "It adds a little touch, don't you think?" at the same exactly way. Another thing was the tension/friendship between Scotaloo and SB, just like their sisters (if you assume RD is Scotaloo sister, what is pretty obvious at this point)

It's not unusual for a show written for young boys to pick up an older male audience, but then it's not unusual for boys' shows to be decently written. Girls shows tend to suck, but this one doesn't.

I suspect part of why many people had trouble warming up to Rarity is that she honestly is the pony that was kinda forced on Faust n co., so even the people in charge weren't sure about how to do her at sfirst. They were told they had to have a clothes-nuts pony. By making her a clothing DESIGNER, an actual artist, it was much less offensive, but at the same time I suspect they had a bit more trouble with her.

I suppose white is considered as the default race, which when you stop to think about it, is a little screwed up. It's like if you make someone a race other than white it's a conscious decision to make them an "other," but white is the tabula rasa race. The problem is that Zecora is pretty explicitly portrayed to be African. One problem of much popular entertainment is that it doesn't reflect diversity: portrayals of people of color are scarce, and when present, are generally in a role of sidekick. One of the nice things about fantastic animation is that no one is explicitly coded a race, so it's easier for someone who's not from a privileged group to identify with them than in conventional media. But Zecora is clearly African (don't even try to deny it between her being a species actually from Africa, the accent, the tribal decorations, etc.), and different from our main characters- casting them again as white, or at least as not black, which means kids of color are left again with their only role model being a magical negro archetype.

As someone who has studied and written extensively on race and the media, MLP is probably one of the less racially problematic shows simply because it's not starring real people or even cartoon people.

There are, of course, racial things here and there, but they don't stop me from enjoying the show as a whole.

One of those things is the "Fu Manchu mustache" mention. Fu Manchu was an extremely offensive stereotype of a evil Chinese villain who symbolized Yellow Peril in the minds of many Westerners and to bring his name up so flippantly is a little off-putting. Overall, though, still a great show without a lot of racial problems.

The Zecora episode was a fun way of touching on prejudice without hitting you over the head with the message or sounding like white people preaching about something they don't really get.
