Rarity is kind of odd like that, I find I like Rarity more for her flaws and overreactions then I like her for her generosity and hard work. The whole sequence of her wallowing in self pity while nick picking at the details of exile, all her little OCD moments in other episodes and her quirks.

When you see that, well it's not the kind of personality you expect to find in a show made for little girls. I originally expected her to be more like a vein high-school girl playing fashion princess, but she turned out much more interesting.

Though I will admit, Rarity is one of those characters you love for her flaws, or you hate for her vanity. Like she's either in your top three, or your least favourite.

As always, it's more about the moral dilemma and learning a valuable lesson. Sure, half the episodes might be out exploring the world or they might be part of the girls every day lives, but all of them are about the lesson of the day and exploring particular characters.

Really it's down to each viewer to take out what they want from the show. Some people want to learn more about the world, other more about the characters and their relationships. So long as we aren't discussing their nipple sizes as humans (looking at you guys) I think it's fair to take it how you like.

It really is interesting how Rarity takes a common horrible stereotype of female characters- the haughty fashion queen- and turns all the usual flaws completely around.

You gotta have believability and interestingness to a high degree. The more you have of both, the deeper the character. I think what I'm trying to get at with interesting, two-dimensional characters is they can actually SURPRISE you, doing things you wouldn't expect them to do without going out of character.

Fluttershy being super timid and caring, but she can use one to overcome the other to protect those she cares about, Rarity being a fashion queen without all the bitch baggage that goes with it, and so on. Most cartoon characters never really do anything outside their shallow initial characterisation. (though, a lot of cartoons rely on that for gags as characters are too flawed or stupid to overcome the same obstacles, but that's not the excuse all the time)
