This is a good time to plug my fanfiction, which is the first real piece of writing I've done in a very long time, and my very first Friendship is Magic fanfiction. I posted it last night in the early AM, so here it is for the day crew.

I am dreadfully bad at summaries, so here is my best attempt. It's a rather grim story, wherein Rainbow Dash finds herself stuck in a mysterious red room. A horribly disfigured pony manages to find her and proceeds to viciously attack her.

This is based on a real dream I had, except without any ponies in it. Please give critique if you can, and above all I hope you enjoy it.

I'm not going to say LOL GOOD ANIMATION (because that's a silly little lie since I haven't seen so many animation errors from a single cartoon in years), but I like it because it's humor isn't grounded in non a billion sequiturs, it takes in countless sources of inspirations and is packed with homages, some that you would expect like Star Trek and Looney Toons, and others that come out of nowhere like Sondheim and Mork and Mindy. It follows the same archetypes of past shows in the same field, but gives those tried and true clichés an extra dimension that makes them feel fresher.

Flash is just an offshoot of director which was created as an animation tool. It's not any better or worse than anything else, and it doesn't really have a style (Metalocaypse isn't MLP although both are Flash animated).

When people think about "Flash Cartoons" they're usually responding to low budget series which almost always use flash because you can cut corners at the cost of the animation.

If you took the same budget and made crappy hand drawn cartoons - no one would say that's the fault of traditional animation, just that the show was underbudgeted.

Cool, but for me what the show does best is the opposite: it's a kid's show that actually manages to create conflict from the character relationships instead of via a Skelator-like figure. Trouble with villains like that is they're almost impossible to not make cheesy and predictable - a conflict like Rarity v.s. Dash at the cloud competition thing is able to generate a delicious feeling of tension because the show could still continue if either character lost, by making the moral of the episode about coping with not winning... and tl;dr

True, true. There can be characters that are dicks, or hungry monsters. Have to admit that the monster-of-the-week episodes which hinge on them going into the Everfree forest aren't my favorite, but if there's a point to it (which there arguably hasn't always been, e.g. with FPK or Staremaster) they can be fine.

I think it's indicative of how dodgey those kinds of villains are that a well-written-show like Avatar basically avoided even showing Ozai onscreen until the last season, and even then he barely escaped being extremely camp. I'm just hoping that Laura's dream of a season-long arc didn't involve leaning too hard on a character like that for drama: she may yet get to actually do a season like that given the show's popularity.
