So...disappointed with the episode; it's barely a 6.5 out of 10. Worst episode yet, which is to say it was pretty good, all things considered.
Here's the problem. The Cutie Mark Crusaders have no personalities. And maybe this is intentional, I guess, since they don't really know what they're supposed to be. But seriously, every single thing any of them did in this or the last episode could have been done by any of them with no alteration whatsoever, except for Apple Bloom's accent--and an accent is not a personality.
And the only other blank flank we've met had, at the time, a great deal of personality. Peppermint Twist was characterized as the overly sweet, cheers-you-up and jollies-you-along teacher's pet we all knew in third grade. Sure, everybody hated her, but at least you knew who she was! The CMCs are an insipid hivemind. Diamond Tiara was right: they're just not special.
And this is tragic in the setting of MLP:FiM, because the great strength of the show is its characters, and the way they interact with each other. It's what sets up fantastic moments like "I'm a year older than you," or the scene outside Rarity's door as she's having a nervous breakdown. When Scootaloo and Apple Bloom get into a did not/did too argument, it goes nowhere, because it lacks the intense personality conflict that drove Rarity and Applejack when they did the same thing. I'm especially disapponted with Apple Bloom. She's had three episodes in the limelight, and she still hasn't picked up a personality, except for "she's childish."
I'm really hoping that they'll be redeemed next time around, since we already know we're stuck with another episode about them. |
